“We created the Judge Vi Award to honor those community leaders, who through adversity and determination, have made a real impact in the lives of our community,” said David G. Henry, Monroe County Democratic Party Chair. “When it comes to a 40-year career in public service, keeping your nose down, and delivering results, we are fortunate to have leaders like Doris Sims who have carried on in Judge Vi’s example.”

MCDP established the Judge Viola Taliaferro Award in 2021, named for the first Black woman on the Monroe County Circuit Court. A former teacher, civic leader, and fierce advocate for children, women, and victims of abuse, Judge Taliaferro was nationally recognized for her work.

Later, she was also an advisor to US Attorney General Janet Reno.

Doris Sims joins 2021 past recipient State Senator Mark Stoops in this new tradition of the Monroe County Democratic Party.

The annual MCDP Fall Taliaferro Dinner is the party’s kickoff for election month. Join guest speakers for an evening celebrating our candidates from the local office to the Statehouse to Washington.

The group welcomes House Leader Phil GiaQuinta (D-Ft. Wayne), who led the fight in the Indiana House alongside Vice President Kamala Harris against the Republican forced birth law in Senate Bill 1.
