BEDFORD – Two people were arrested Wednesday when Bedford Police officers were called at 8:40 p.m. to 3000 block of 5th Street after a report of a burglary in progress.
The caller reported he could see someone inside his neighbor’s home hiding and he caught them on camera.
When officers arrived on the scene they surrounded the two homes. While doing that they received a report that someone had entered a black Lincoln Aviator.
Officers found the vehicle parked in the driveway and found 23-year-old Ashely Yarnell, of Martinsville, in the driver’s seat.
She told police she had just purchased the two homes and the vehicle. However, when police ran the license plate they found the vehicle belonged to one of the homeowners, not to Yarnell.
Yarnell was detained.
She continued to tell officers she had “literally just got into them (the homes) today”. She was then asked who was with her and she told police 47-year-old Danny Large, of North Vernon. She was then asked who the vehicle belonged to and she replied “it was her vehicle and she had the keys”.
Yarnell was then placed in the back of a police vehicle.
Officers noticed a gray Dodge Magnum in the driveway of the other home and found the front door of the home open.
When officers entered that home they found a black purse with several items from the purse scattered about.
Both homes were found to be unoccupied at the time. Police used canine Maximus in an attempt to search for Large.
In the meantime, officers spoke to one of the homeowners who were in Arizona and were told no one was given permission to be in the home.
The other homeowner also allowed police to enter their home to look for evidence.
Officers then reviewed camera security footage from one of the homes showing Large and Yarnell inside the home and the garage.
Officers said Large had fled from the area.
Yarnell continued to tell police she had purchased the homes and the vehicle.
She finally admitted she and Large had entered both of the homes without permission. She said she had used the garage door openers found in one house to enter the garage of the other home.
She said she then entered the Lincoln in an attempt to leave the scene.
She told police that Large had removed two vacuums and cleaning supplies from the homes and they were in the gray Dodge. She said she had left her purse in one of the homes.
Large’s vehicle was searched after obtaining a search warrant and the stolen items were recovered. Large’s wallet was also found in the vehicle. The vehicle was towed from the scene by Mikels Wrecker Service. DNA samples were also taken from the scene.
Officers then used a drone and searched the area but the drone was damaged during the search.
At 2:24 a.m. officers located Danny Large walking east on 5th Street and he was detained.
He too told police he was at the property with Yarnell because she was buying both properties.
He said he “got suspicious” when they entered the home and none of Yarnell’s possessions were in the home. He said he left the home and “began walking around the woodline”. He said he and Yarnell got into an argument and “went their separate ways” and went back to the woods. He said when he came back out “his vehicle was gone so he began walking”.
He finally admitted he knew the properties did not belong to Yarnell. He did admit to removing the vacuum cleaners and other items from the homes. He said once he realized the police arrived he fled the scene and went back into the woods.
Large and Yarnell face charges of burglary, auto theft, and theft.
