BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested Friday afternoon after Bedford Police Officers received an alert from Jackson County Dispatch, advising of a possibly intoxicated driver.
Officers located the vehicle, a black Kia Rio after the driver failed to signal his lane change, where officers then initiated a traffic stop near the downtown square.
As officers approached the vehicle, the noticeable smell of alcohol could be detected on the driver, later identified as Winston McPike of Bedford. Officers began to talk with McPike, where they noticed his speech was slurred as well as three young boys in the back of the vehicle.
McPike was asked to step out of the vehicle, where he admitted to drinking before driving his vehicle. Officers were notified by dispatch that McPike was a habitual offender. They submitted him to a field sobriety test, where he was unable to follow the instruction’s from the officer. McPike consented to a blood draw, following a failed breathalyzer test.
His wife arrived at the scene to pick up the children and take them home, she was released from the scene without incident.
McPike was arrested on the charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI habitual offender, operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangerment, and neglect of a dependent. He was then booked in the Lawrence County Jail.
