LAWRENCE COUNTY – Barbara Miller has been voted in as a new member of the North Lawrence Community School Board, replacing her competitor Dr. Kamal Girgis for the District 5 seat.
When the final votes had been counted and tallied together, Miller was among many other individuals who were caught off-guard by the results.
“I don’t know how to feel at the moment,” said Miller. “My head is still spinning, my first thought was are we sure they have the count right?’ I am truly shocked, but I am ready to work to bring the community together with transparency and by building the trust of the families of NLCS and the community.”
While she has been outspoken on what her plans are now that she has been voted in, Miller hopes she can bring truth and transparency to the community moving forward.
“I want to do what is right for the kids,” Miller said. “My heart has bled for these children following all of the changes over the past years, and I hope to bring stability for them and give teachers the raises they truly deserve. Many community members feel like they have been left out when it comes to some of the decisions that have been made, and I hope to be as transparent as I can and get [NLCS] going in the right direction.”
The final vote count for Miller was 5,185, or 62.03 percent, while Girgis ended with 3,174 votes or 37.97 percent.
