BEDFORD – Bedford North Lawrence opened the 2022-23 campaign with three team wins during the Super 6 Duals on Saturday.
The Stars conquered Silver Creek (54-24), Forest Park (48-18) and North Harrison (48-36) before falling to New Albany (57-18) in the finale.
BNL’s Jorj Filler won four matches, all by pin, at 126 pounds to lead BNL. He trapped Silver Creek’s Mason Allen (1:00), Forest Park’s Jaxon Welp (0:34), North Harrison’s Maverick Vonallmen (1:33) and New Albany’s Jaden Ferguson (1:01).
”Jorj really set the tone with his performance,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “He’s been dedicated in the preseason, and that work paid off today.”
Other top performers for BNL included Patrell Childs (two pins at 113), Jayella Filler (two pins at 120), Ethan Stancombe (two pin triumphs at 152), Jaxon Powell (two wins in his only competitive matches at 170) and Junior Arellano (three wins at 285). Wyatt Philpott posted a pin in his varsity debut during his only contested match.
”Wyatt is a freshman wrestling his first match ever,” Branam said. “We have so many people on the team that are brand new, but they are all ready to learn and work hard. Jayella Filler did a great job today. She showed a ton of fight.
”New Albany brought a really tough team, and I think we learned a lot of lessons there. That is the level we have to be able to compete at in order to advance in the postseason. Overall, I’m really proud of this team and I see a ton of growth potential.”
The Stars will host Scottsburg on Nov. 29.
