INDIANAPOLIS – Monday at 2:35 p.m., Indiana State Troopers along with emergency personnel from the Indianapolis Fire Department responded to a serious roll-over crash on I-74 westbound at the 100-mile marker, which is near the Pleasant View Exit.
A 911 caller reported a vehicle had struck the rear end of a stopped semi-tractor trailer and rolled several times. When first responders arrived they found a Good Samaritan performing CPR on an adult female.
Despite life-saving efforts, 63-year-old Kathleen Bunyer, of Huntington West Virginia was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, Ms. Bunyer was riding in was also transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An infant in the same vehicle was transported to an area hospital for a medical evaluation however no serious injuries were reported.
A preliminary investigation on scene by Trooper Ryan McKnight determined an earlier crash between a dump truck and a semi tractor-trailer led to the semi pulling over into the median, however, the rear of the semi-trailer was partially in the left lane. Prior to emergency responders getting on the scene to investigate the first crash, a Ford Expedition driven by Bruce Bunyer, of Huntington West Virginia side-swiped the back of the semi-trailer and then rolled several times. The Expedition was occupied by four adults and an infant. Investigators do not suspect impairment as a contributing factor to this crash.
Emergency responders and crash reconstructionists were on the scene of the crash and the westbound lanes of I-74 were closed until 7:00 p.m. while the crash was investigated. The driver of the semi was not injured nor were there any injuries reported as a result of the first crash between the dump truck and the semi.
The Indiana State Police was assisted by the Marion County Coroner’s Office and the Indianapolis Fire Department.
