BLOOMINGTON – Outgoing Bloomington City Council President Susan Sandberg has officially filed with the Monroe County Election Board as a candidate in the May 2 Democratic Primary Election for Mayor of Bloomington.
A four-time City Council President, Sandberg has been a Representative At-Large for 16 years. She is a founding member of the Democratic Women’s Caucus and previously served as Vice Chair of the Monroe County Democratic Party. She’s served on the Bloomington Utilities Service Board, the Bloomington Plan Commission, the Jack Hopkins Social Services Fund, the Waldron Study Group, and the Development Block Grant citizens advisory committee.
A co-sponsor of the 2019 report of the city’s Affordable Living Committee, titled Working Hard, Falling Behind, Sandberg has made Affordability a cornerstone of her mayoral campaign. Other key themes are:
- Fully funding Public Safety, including competitive pay for Bloomington’s chronically understaffed police;
- Restoration and maintenance of the city’s Basic Services; and
- A rebuilding of Collaboration and Trust between the Mayor’s Office and the City Council, Monroe County government, community experts, and constituents.
“Bloomington is a unique place with an immense talent pool and an open-hearted ethic,” Sandberg says. “This city can be the economic engine of Southern Indiana if we sustain a pragmatic vision for responsible growth and development. But Bloomington needs a mayor who is also focused on the immediate challenges of the present. I believe my direct experience in this city’s government, under two mayors, through 16 budget cycles, uniquely positions me to be that mayor.”
Sandberg announced her intention to run for mayor of Bloomington on November 13, 2022. For more information, contact Janice Sorby, (812) 650-2800, or email susansandberg2023@gmail.com.
