FRANKLIN – Bedford North Lawrence’s Alivia Crane and Samantha Biel qualified for the IHSGW state finals during the Southeast Regional at Franklin on Friday night.
Crane finished third in the 132-pound weight class while Biel was fourth at 138.
Crane lost her first-round match, then posted four straight wins. She conquered Jeffersonville’s Merceylees Watson (pin in 4:16), Mooresville’s Kira Childs (pin in 1:35), Columbus North’s Mia Hernandez (pin in 2:27) and Columbus North’s Arrabella Fortino (pin in 2:05) to work her way through the consolation bracket.
“Alivia is continuing to develop into a great wrestler,” BNL coach Chris Branam said. “As a freshman, she took second at freshman/sophomore girls state. Now this year she gets to throw in with the upperclassmen.”
Biel also fell in the first round, then roared back with wins over Jeffersonville’s Arissa Washington (pin in 1:26), Ben Davis’ Yanelly Molina Moreno (pin in 2:36) and Mooresville’s Sinna Zheng (Zheng suffered an injury at 21 seconds).
“Obviously huge for Sam after senior night (on Thursday),” Branam said. “Last year she got her first win ever at girls regionals. This year she’s on the podium. Really proud of them both, bouncing back from a first-round loss to go on a tear of pins.”
BNL finished 14th among 39 teams. Amber Ventura (152) and Arianna Andis (160) also competed.
