INDIANA – The Martinsville section of I-69 was recently named the top road project by Roads & Bridges magazine. The publication annually announces an exclusive list of the top ten road and bridge projects in the country. Projects are selected from a highly competitive pool of submissions from Departments of Transportation and other entities across the country.
“This distinction is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the project team, and countless others involved in making what was once a dream of expanding I-69 a reality,” said INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith.
The nearly six-mile stretch of I-69 opened to traffic in December 2021 following a nearly year-long closure of State Road 37 in Martinsville. The closure ensured the safety of construction workers and motorists during construction. This section of I-69 Finish Line saw upgrades to nearly six miles of existing S.R. 37, 11 new bridges, and construction of interchanges at S.R. 39, Ohio Street, and a combined interchange at S.R. 44 and S.R. 252. Nighttime left lane closures for median work continue after the holidays along I-465 between Mann Road and Harding Street.
Construction crews will be repairing potholes next week between the Mann Road bridge and Harding Street. Intermittent lane closures on I-465 near S.R. 37 are to be expected.
As temperatures continue to fluctuate and potholes begin popping up, motorists are encouraged to inform road crews of potential areas of concern by utilizing INDOT4U(1-855-463-6748).
Because of the current roundabout construction, the north approach of Huggin Hollow Road at SR 144 allows a right turn only. Motorists wishing to go eastbound on S.R. 144 from Huggin Hollow Road should follow the signs to southbound Old S.R. 37 and use the signalized intersection at S.R. 144.
Twelve miles of I-69 officially opened from Martinsville to the new S.R. 144 interchange in December. INDOT was joined by the Federal Highway Administration, public and elected officials, and members of the I-69 Finish Line project team to celebrate another major step toward progress.
The actual starting date and duration for work and any closures may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.
