MITCHELL – During Monday evening’s Mitchell Community Schools board meeting, Superintendent Brent Comer provided members an update on the progress of the district’s ongoing capital projects, including the turfing of the baseball and softball fields, the new fieldhouse athletics facility and the maintenance storage facility.
According to Comer, turfing of the fields is set to begin late next week if things remain on track. If things proceed as scheduled, Comer believes the fields will be ready for the start of the baseball and softball seasons in the Spring. As that work is going on, crews will also work to finish the new press boxes and seating that will be installed.
Things could be delayed based on the weather, as Comer said the adhesive used to hold the turf together needs temperatures as warm as at least 40 degrees to function properly. Should turfing not begin next week because of delays, Comer said the fields may not be ready for the beginning of the season.
The opening of the fieldhouse has been delayed, with the new unveiling date targeted for August, according to Comer. Though some aspects of the facility, such as the weight room or wrestling room, may be completed prior to that time, Comer said the plan is for it to officially open once everything is fully completed and ready to go.
The maintenance storage facility is nearing completion. Comer said the district is nearing the point where they will be able to create a punch list for the final walk-through of the building, likey before the end of the month.
