INDIANA – The 2023 individual income tax filing season is here.
The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) will start accepting filings for 2022 individual income tax returns on Monday, Jan. 23, in concert with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
You will have until Tuesday, April 18, to file both state and federal 2022 tax returns and pay any taxes owed.
While Indiana tax forms for the upcoming individual income tax season are now available online, it’s important to wait to file your 2022 tax return until you receive all of your official tax documents and statements.
All employers are required to provide Form W-2s to employees by Jan. 31, 2023. However, other forms may be needed to file an accurate tax return, including documents on freelance or gig income, business income, investments, interest, or prize winnings.
Employers may continue to adjust annual wage and deduction amounts before sending the official Form W-2 to employees and related wage information to the IRS and DOR. If you use the information on your last paycheck of the year or other unofficial sources of tax information, you risk having to file an amended tax return with adjusted numbers. This can delay any tax refund due, cause you to repay a tax refund received in error, or pay penalties and interest on any additional amount owed.
Additionally, there is a required change for filing wage statements. All wage statements, such as Form W-2s or Form 1099s, will need to be listed on a new form, Schedule IN-W. You can expect DOR-certified software vendors to include this form in their products. If you file your taxes on paper, you should include the new form, along with other required forms and schedules, with your tax return.
