BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested when a Bedford Police officer was alerted to an erratic driver in a maroon Ford F-150 swerving on State Road 37 near 29th Street just after 11 a.m. on Thursday.
Dispatch then received a second call reporting the driver ran a stop light at State Road 37 and 29th Street and drove into a ditch on 29th Street.
When a Bedford officer arrived on the scene they found the truck still in the ditch along with the driver 56-year-old Edward Andis unconscious and not responding to bystanders who had stopped to help.
The officer opened the truck door, put the vehicle into park, and turned off the engine.
Andis began to wake up and become responsive after multiple sternum rubs.
An IU LifeLine ambulance crew responded to the scene. Andis was assisted to the ambulance and was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.Â
Once at the hospital, Andis was administered a preliminary breath test which yielded a positive result for alcohol at 0.174 percent.
A warrant was also issued for a blood draw and those results are pending.
Once Andis was medically cleared he was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI endangerment, and operating a vehicle while his driver’s license was suspended.
