Important tips to speed up the process for those expecting a tax refund

INDIANA – The Indiana Department of Revenue released some important tips to speed up the process for those expecting a tax refund.

File electronically

Reduce the time to process your return and get your refund by filing electronically using certified software or online services. This option also increases the accuracy of your return.

Use direct deposit

Decrease your refund wait time by providing bank account information for direct deposit. This includes your nine-digit routing number for your financial institution—which is typically printed in the lower-left corner of your check—and your account number, which is located to the right of your routing number.

Gather all your tax documents

Make sure you have Form W-2 Wage and Tax Statements and Form 1099(s) before filing your tax return. Online tax preparation checklists help ensure you have all the documents you need. Employers are required to distribute wage and tax statements no later than Jan. 31, 2023.

Follow your refund

Check the status of your refund using DOR’s e-services portal, the Indiana Taxpayer Information Management Engine (INTIME). Find the “Where’s my refund?” panel and follow the prompts. You’ll need your Social Security Number and the exact refund amount from your individual tax return.

If you owe taxes, here are some tips to make sure your payment is applied correctly.

File and pay on time

The deadline for filing your taxes is Tuesday, April 18, 2023.

If you are unable to file your return by that date, you may file for an extension. This gives you until Nov. 15, 2023, to file. However, an extension does not apply to taxes owed.

To avoid paying interest and penalties, you should pay 90% of your estimated tax bill by April 18.

Pay through INTIME

The easiest way to submit your payment is through INTIME. Electronic bank payments (ACH/e-check) and VISA, MasterCard, and Discover credit, or debit card payments are accepted. There is no fee for electronic bank payments, although credit and debit cards have applicable fees.

You do not need an INTIME account to make a secure payment. Simply choose the “Make a Payment” link on the INTIME homepage and follow the instructions. You can also pay in person at one of our district offices. Cash in the exact amount only, personal checks, cashier’s checks, and money orders are accepted.

Pay by mail

Mail your return and enclosures along with a check to:

Indiana Department of Revenue
P.O. Box 7224
Indianapolis, IN 46207-7224.

Do not mail IRS and DOR payments together

If you file electronically but pay by mail, do not include a printed copy of your return with the payment. Be sure to include the payment voucher that is printed by your preparer or printed with your copy of the return.

For all Indiana taxpayers

Indiana has several individual income tax returns, and you must file the correct form.

Most will use Form IT-40 for full-year residents. If you did not live in Indiana for the entire year in 2022, or if you live in another state but still earned income in Indiana, you will choose a different form.
