BEDFORD – Bedford Fire Department responded to an equipment building fire on Saturday morning.
Firefighters were alerted to the blaze a 1:37 a.m. at Science Applications International Corporation, Inc. (SAIC) at 3290 16th Street.
According to Bedford Fire Department Chief John Hughes, the building was used to store a forklift, chainsaws, weedeaters, and other tools and equipment.
The building was around 25 feet by 40 feet. There was damage throughout the building. They were able to get the forklift and some other equipment out of the building, but the damage to the building and contents was extensive.
Firefighters from all three stations responded.
“We called additional off-duty firefighters to come to assist at the scene,” said Chief John Hughes.
At this time the cause of the fire is being investigated by the Indiana State Fire Marshal.
“Firefighters left around 6:30 a.m. and I remained on the scene until 7 a.m. with the fire marshal. The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” added Chief Hughes. “We were there a total of 6 1/2 hours.”
