ROCKVILLE – The incarcerated population of the Rockville Correctional Facility (RCF) recently took part in a fundraising opportunity, with the proceeds being earmarked to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Central Indiana.
The fundraiser offered incarcerated individuals the ability to order Krispy Kreme doughnuts through Krispy Kreme’s special community fundraising outreach. Half the money paid by the participants went directly toward the donation. In all the incarcerated population raised $3,091.
The Rockville Correctional Facility houses more than 900 adult females remanded to the Indiana Department of Correction. This population has a special, and for many, a deeply personal affinity for the Susan G, Komen Foundation given the greater incidence of breast cancers amongst females. This awareness was the impetus for the creation of RCF’s Hope Awareness Group a few years ago. Hope is open to incarcerated individuals who have gone through or are currently experiencing cancer treatments. This group meets in a relaxed environment where they can discuss their experiences and share insights into their personal journeys. Hope has also been instrumental in helping to spread information throughout the population on topics such as self-examination for potential problems. The Hope Group does exactly what it sounds like it would do – offers hope exactly when it’s needed most.
Lori Mitchell, Development Specialist for Indiana and Kentucky was on hand to accept the donation on behalf of the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Lori has assisted RCF’s efforts to keep the incarcerated population informed and engaged by providing educational materials and support when necessary. When accepting the check Lori commented, “This donation means so much to the foundation. First and foremost, our donation monies go for research – to find a cure for cancer. Secondly, a portion of this donation will be used for the new Breast Care Helpline. The helpline not only offers information but emotional support and guidance, as well.”
If you, or someone you care about need information or support regarding breast cancer please reach out to www.Komen.org or call 1 (877) GoKomen. Donations can be made using these contact points as well.
