INDIANA – It’s been a few weeks since the start of this year’s individual income tax season, so the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is providing some quick information on how to file your taxes and what forms to use.
The applicable paper forms used for filing individual income taxes include the following:
Form IT-40: for full-year residents
- Use if you and your spouse were full-year Indiana residents.
Form IT-40PNR: for part- and full-year nonresidents
- Use if you and/or your spouse are filing jointly and were Indiana residents for less than a full year (or not at all) and you do not qualify to file Form IT-40RNR.
Form IT-40RNR: use if you meet both requirements:
- A full-year resident of one of the following states: Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin; and
- Received only the following types of income from Indiana: wages, salaries, tips, or other compensation.
Note: If you have other Indiana-source income, you will have to file Form IT-40PNR.
E-filing Methods
E-filing allows you to file taxes online at your convenience and speeds up refunds while reducing errors.
Customers who use a tax professional to prepare their individual returns can file both state and federal returns via the Federal/State Electronic Filing Program. Find an approved e-file provider, or DOR-approved e-filing companies.
Since this is a combined federal-and-state program, customers will file both their federal and Indiana returns at the same time. You can participate in this program by:
- taking your completed return to an Electronic Return Originator who can transmit your return information for you; or
- having a tax professional prepare your returns, then transmit them to you.
Indiana also offers INfreefile, a way to file your state and federal taxes for free! Check out DOR’s INfreefile webpage to see if you qualify based on your income.
If you have further questions about electronically filing your Indiana individual income taxes, contact DOR by email.
