Lawrence County 4-H members spend a day at the Statehouse

STATEHOUSE – On Tuesday, February 7th, five Lawrence County 4-H members traveled to the Indiana State House in Indianapolis to learn how the government functions and how the 4-H programs are affected. Attending from Lawrence County were 4-H members Isabelle Barker, Heaven Cooper, Eleanor Howat, Jacob Burrus, Sophia Osmon, and 4-H Youth Development Educator Lesley Lodmell.

Four of the five members attended last year’s day at the Statehouse with one new member attending this year.

The members took part in many interesting things throughout the day such as meeting Senator Eric Koch, hearing from different representatives and the Lieutenant Governor and taking a history tour around the Statehouse.

4-H members visited with Senator Eric Koch right out of the gate. They all asked really good questions and learned a bit about what happens during a Senate session and what happens between the Senate and the House of Representatives.  Afterward, Senator Koch took the group into the Senate Chambers for a picture.

The group also listened to speeches given by representatives and the Lieutenant Governor.  Good information was given on how a bill is made, how to get into politics, and why they want the next generation to someday come and work at the Statehouse.

Finally, the 4-H members toured the Statehouse and saw the Treasury, the Senate Chambers, the House of Representatives, and the Supreme Court.  Many historical facts about Indiana, the State House, and its construction were given to the group.  The group also learned about the different levels of court and how the supreme court is part of the state court system.

The 4-H participants would like to thank the Statehouse staff, Senator Eric Koch, the representatives who spoke, and the 4-H community for giving them the opportunity to have a fast-paced, educational, and fun-filled day.
