BEDFORD – On Saturday, Feb. 11, each of North Lawrence Community Schools’ 14 robotics teams competed in a tournament, hosted at Shawswick Elementary School, alongside 16 other teams from local schools from Bloomington, Henryville, Middletown, Central, Corydon, Stinesville, Washington and Springville.
Bedford Middle School’s 72747A team finished the event in first place and three Needmore teams placed in the top five, Needmore 70632F was third, Needmore 70632G was fourth and Needmore 70632E was fifth.

During the event, there were several issues with different robots, such robots being dropped and breaking apart, controllers and brains disconnecting, robots needing firmware updates, parts disconnecting, even one robot needing a total rebuild, according to NLCS robotics coordinator Naomi Trojan.
Trojan said the students came together to help one another, regardless of which school they were there to represent.
“There were so many teams helping each other out. It did not matter if they were from the same school or not. It truly was a sight to see and that is why I love robotics,” she said.
Thus far, four NLCS teams have qualified for the VEX Robotics State Championship event on March 25 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
