MORGAN CO. – The DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology serves as the state historic preservation office (SHPO) for Indiana. One of the federal mandates assigned to SHPOs under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 is to coordinate a statewide inventory of historic properties—otherwise known as a survey.
Indiana’s approach has been to send surveyors to a particular county, drive every road, and then fill out a form, record geographical data, and take photographs of any property that is at least 40 years old or older and meets other survey requirements.
The DHPA’s survey program is resuming this year after a hiatus to create a new application, as well as delays related to COVID. The survey will pick up Morgan County and is expected to take about a year.
The collected data will be added to SHAARD (the DHPA’s database) as various townships are surveyed.
