BEDFORD – The owner of the property at 2519-2531 29th Street in Bedford, formerly Kingpin Bowl/Broadview Bowl, requested the Bedford Redevelopment Commission to rezone the land to allow him to place storage units throughout the property.
The property is currently zoned as B-1 Convenience District and would need to be changed to I-1 Light Industrial District.
Joshua Lewis, the owner of the property, spoke to the RDC on Tuesday, advising them that the building was beyond repair and unable to be rehabilitated to reopen once again as a bowling alley because the roof has collapsed, the basement has filled with water and the building has become infested with mold.
Lewis plans to demolish the building, replacing it with over 300 storage units which would be protected by a chain link fence around the entire property with an automatic gate that has a pin pad access. He said there would be 24-hour access and 24-hour security surveillance along with new security lighting.
Lewis was asked by the commission if he allow people to store RVs and boats on the property, though they eventually agreed that it would not be ideal unless he would be able to conceal the vehicles from the roadway. Lewis advised that a section of the grounds could be utilized for this purpose potentially and plans to return to the RDC in the future with detailed plans on how he could do so.
The commission also advised Lewis that it would be preferable to have a solid fence instead of chain link to separate the business from the residential area across the street. Lewis agreed and said he would alter his plans to include that, as well as to add solid fencing around the north side of the property.
The matter will move to a public hearing, which will take place at the next RDC meeting.
