Nita Jean (Green) Gilliatt, 89, of Columbus, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, February 15, 2023.
She was born in Eram, Oklahoma on October 14, 1933, to Opal Vivian (Elliott) Green and Albert Curtis Green.
Nita lived life loving and serving Jesus, building faith in those God brought into her life. She especially loved children and taught Sunday School for many years. She retired in 1999 after a long career in the North Lawrence Community School System, working as a tutor at Lincoln Elementary School, as the secretary at Englewood Elementary School, and finally as the secretary at Parkview Primary School. She cared for the church and school children like they were her own.
Nita was known for her yummy caramels and beautiful greeting cards. She loved to read and was known to read 2-3 books a day.
Nita is survived by her 4 children: Larry Dennis Holloway, Steven Russell Holloway, Barry King Gilliatt, and Penny Lynne Gilliatt, one sister Nancy Kathryn (Green) Johnson, 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter, and many loving friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, Thomas George Gilliatt, her 6 siblings: Curtis Eugene Green, Betty Jo (Wayne) Young, LD (Verba Lee) Green, Joyce Wanda (Paul) Miller, Norman Cullis Green, and James Thomas Green, and her former spouse, Leroy Walter Holloway.
Visitation will be at the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford, Indiana, on Monday, February 20, 2023, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. Nita will be laid to rest at a private graveside service at Gilgal Cemetery in Heltonville, Indiana on Tuesday, February 21st.
