FREETOWN – A Freetown family’s home was destroyed by fire Friday morning in the 10000 block of North County Road 675 West.
The homeowner Eliza Gullett told firefighters she woke up to the smell of smoke and noticed a small fire on the pipe coming from her woodstove. She and Jason McKinney quickly gathered their children and fled the home. The home is owned by Vivian McKinney.
Firefighters from Pershing Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the blaze at 5:47 a.m. and then requested assistance from Brownstown, Hamilton, and Owen-Salt Creek Township Volunteer Fire Departments.
Firefighters were on the scene for more than four hours battling the blaze and extinguishing hotspots.
The American Red Cross was alerted to assist the family.
