BLOOMINGTON – The National Weather Service in Indianapolis has proclaimed the week of March 12-18th as Severe Weather Preparedness Week for the State of Indiana.
In response to the Severe Weather Week, there will be a statewide tornado drill at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14. In the event of severe weather on Tuesday, March 14, the statewide drill will instead take place on Wednesday, March 15 at 10:15 a.m.
Monroe County will be participating in the statewide tornado drill. The outdoor warning sirens around the county will sound at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14.
The Emergency Management Office encourages residents, businesses, and schools to take this drill as an opportunity to practice their action plan in response to a severe weather threat.
The purpose of these outdoor warning sirens is to give an advanced warning to members of the public who may be caught outdoors or driving during a severe weather threat. Many Indiana residents know that weather conditions can change very quickly, so these sirens can help get everyone to a safer location when a weather threat is upon us.
An adequate warning of severe weather is crucial so that people can prepare and take action to keep themselves and their families safe. These sirens, along with other weather alert systems, play a factor in the safety of everyone during a weather threat.
