Linton boys basketball coach arrested for the second time in three months

LINTON – Linton’s head boys basketball coach, 50-year-old Joey Hart has been arrested for the second time in three months.

Shelbyville police arrested 50-year-old Joey Hart on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangerment after stopping his vehicle on State Road 33 and South Marietta Street.

“Linton-Stockton High School Boys Basketball Coach, Joey Hart, has been suspended indefinitely,” said Linton-Stockton Superintendent Dr. Kathy Goad. “Assistant Coach Noah Hawkins will take over the head coaching duties immediately and until further notice. This will be the only statement released by the school corporation or persons within the school and basketball program on this action, as we are bound by policy on discussing personnel matters.”

According to court documents, Hart refused a chemical test after he was pulled over. Police secured a warrant for a blood draw. Those results are pending.

Hart was released from jail this morning after appearing in court.

On February 22, 2023, Hart was issued a citation for driving while his driver’s license was suspended. He paid $145.50 in fines and court costs.

Hart was placed on Administrative leave after he was arrested on a public intoxication charge in the overnight hours of December 31st.

According to a Clay County Sheriff’s Department report, on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2022, around 2:29 a.m., Clay County Dispatch received multiple witness reports of a red van that was stopped in the middle of State Road 159, south of SR 246 near Coalmont.

The driver of that van was Hart. Police said Hart was intoxicated, had red eyes, slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol.

He was incarcerated in the Clay County Jail in Brazil and his bond was set at $3,000.

Hart entered into a pretrial diversion agreement on Feb. 20, 2023, and paid $343 in court costs and filing fees to enter the program.
