MITCHELL – A Bedford man was arrested after a small child tells police the truth.
Lawrence County Central Dispatch received a 911 hang-up at 3956 Dixie Highway. The dispatcher reported to the officers there was an extensive history of domestic disputes at the home and that a male living there, 30-year-old Gregory Cabage, was wanted on an outstanding warrant for a petition to revoke on a previous domestic battery arrest.
When police arrived, officers went to both the front and back of the house because Cabage had attempted to flee from officers before.
While officers were checking the area, a woman came out of the front door. She claimed she had accidentally called 911.
She was then asked if Cabage was in the home. She was adamant that Cabage was not inside but officers said she appeared nervous and anxious to go back inside. Officers let the woman enter the home. But then decided to speak to her again and knocked on the door. She answered and was asked again what happened and if Cabage was inside. She said he was not there and nothing happened, but one of her children spoke up and said “you shouldn’t lie to the police, he’s back in the bedroom”.
The woman was asked again if Cabage was in the home and she said the kids were lying. She then started crying and said he was indeed in the bedroom.
Officers entered the home and found Cabage in the bedroom hiding inside a walk-in closet. He was detained.
An officer then noticed a large red welt on the woman’s cheek. The woman said she didn’t want it to be her fault that Cabage went to jail. She admitted the kids had called 911 when she and Cabage were fighting.
The six-year-old told police he witnessed Cabage punch his mother in the face while they were in the kitchen. However, the woman denied it happened.
Cabage was detained on a charge of domestic battery and the outstanding warrant.
