Altrua International of Bedford members make donations to Core Nursing Home, volunteer to help at Lawrence County Museum

BEDFORD – The March 13 meeting of Altrusa International of Bedford met on March 13th at The Mixing Bowl with 16 members present and four guests attending, including Angela Beck, Governor-Elect of District Six.

District Six is made up of clubs from Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Angela spoke to the group about the importance of recruiting new members and the upcoming conference in Muncie, April 21-23. She was presented with a piece of limestone with the carvings of the three district states as a memento of her visit.

Bedford Altrusa was chartered in 1949 and was sponsored by the New Albany club. In honor of Women In History Month, Becky Bailey and Tammy Harrell presented a short program spotlighting the club’s first president, Thusnelda Howard, and her acceptance of the club’s charter.

Donations for Core Nursing Home were on display by Marti Arvin. Each resident will receive a corkboard, as requested by officials at the nursing home, and Easter candy.

New officers for the term beginning June 1 were nominated and approved. They are Bill Barnes, President, Kathleen Row, Vice President, Mary Barnes, Secretary and Sara Kern, Treasurer. Loretta Bailey will remain as Corresponding Secretary.

Altrusa members continue to volunteer at the Lawrence County Museum every Tuesday.

Members voted to work alongside the Bedford Lions Club at the October pancake breakfast.
