OOLITIC – On Thursday, March 16th at 6 p.m. Oolitic Town Marshal Sgt. Shaun Cabral conducted a traffic stop at State Road 54 at the intersection of State Road 37.
The vehicle a white Nissan was being driven by 24-year-old Dalaney Sommerfeld, of Lawrenceburg, KY. Inside the vehicle was 26-year-old Jason Reeder, 26, of Lawrenceburg, and two small children. As the officer was making the traffic stop Dalaney opened her door and attempted to exit the vehicle.
She told the officer her car was experiencing electrical issues. She then told police she was traveling for work but did not know exactly how to get there. She showed the officer the GPS app on her phone, which showed a final destination of Sullivan Indiana. Sommerfeld gave the officer a Flordia driver’s license but admitted she didn’t have insurance for the vehicle.
During this conversation with the driver, the officer noticed Reeder sitting in the passenger seat and a baby and toddler sleeping in the back seat.
The officer noticed Reeder was staring at the floorboard and would periodically glance at the officer. While handing the officer his Kentucky identification card the officer noticed Reeder’s hands were shaking.
Sommerfeld did admit there was a THC vape pen in the vehicle. The officer then retrieved the vape pen from the car.
The officer then asked if there was anything else illegal in the vehicle and Sommerfeld said there shouldn’t be. But Reeder handed the officer a black bag from the passenger floorboard and said it contained “ice” in it. Ice is a street term for methamphetamine.
In the bag was a glass vile containing meth and a glass smoking device containing meth residue.
Reeder was then detained and Sommerfeld was left to attend to the crying baby.
Oolitic Marshal James Harrington arrived to assist at the scene and he arranged for Deputy Robyn Compton to come to the scene to transport the children to the Oolitic Town Marshall’s Office. The Department of Child Services was also alerted.
Sommerfeld admitted the meth belonged to both her and Reeder.
Sommerfeld was also transported to the department with her children. She contacted her stepmother who lived in Anderson County, Kentucky to take custody of the children. The vehicle was towed by Mikels Towing and Recover LLC.
Once back at the Marshal’s Office, Oolitic Town Council President Tangie Jenkins, and her mother provided food and beverages for the mother and her children, and Oolitic Town Clerk Annette Pritchett Norrick donated several toys to the two small juveniles, in an attempt to help make a stressful situation less stressful to them.
However, after Sommerfeld and Reece admitted to smoking meth the night before in the presence of the children the Department of Child Services took custody of the children.
“The compassion and professionalism that Council President Jenkins and her mother, Clerk Norrick, Sergeant Cabral, Deputy Compton, and Deputy Atchison displayed are commendable, they went above and beyond to try to help comfort a family during a stressful time in their lives, and this is one of many reasons why I’m proud to serve as Oolitic’s Town Marshal,” said Town Marshal Harrington.
Both Sommerfeld and Reeder were detained on charges of possession of meth, neglect of a dependant, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
