INDIANA – Every year, Indiana DNR offers Hoosiers four opportunities to fish for free.
This year’s Free Fishing Days are May 7, June 3-4, and Sept. 23.
On Free Fishing Days, Indiana residents do not need a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp to fish the state’s public waters. All other rules such as seasons, bag, and size limits apply.
Whether you’re fishing for dinner or a new thrill, a free fishing day is your chance to get on the water.
Free Fishing Days are an excellent opportunity to learn how to fish, take your family fishing, or introduce a friend to fishing. To see what properties are hosting events, go to the DNR Calendar.
If you enjoyed the Free Fishing Days, consider purchasing a fishing license so you can fish throughout the entire year (the license year is April 1 to March 31 of the following year). License sales support research, habitat management, public access, fish stocking, and education programs.
Fishing can be hard for someone just starting – the choice in rods, reels, bait, lures, and lines can be mind-boggling. So, when first learning how to fish, keep it simple, light, and close to home.
Light fishing lines with small bobbers, weights, hooks, and bait can help you get some excitement on the end of the line fast. Beginner anglers (kids or adults) may tire quickly and often give up while waiting for a giant bass to bite. Most beginners would rather pull in 25 minnow-sized bluegills than wait for one trophy catch. Already know the basics? Check out these more advanced fishing tips.
