COLUMBUS — A dog perished in a mobile home fire Wednesday night in the 2900 block of Scotland Drive in Columbus.
Columbus Fire Department firefighters responded to the blaze after a 911 call at 7:58 p.m. at Candlelight Village Mobile Home Park.
When firefighters arrived they found flames shooting from a window and heavy smoke billowing from the front door.
The owner of the mobile home told investigators no one was inside when the fire began. All four adults were working on projects outside when they heard a popping sound and then saw smoke. The family dog was inside. One person attempted to enter the home to get the dog but it was too smoky and he had to retreat.
When firefighters went inside to attack the blaze they found there was heavy fire and thick smoke reducing visibility.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in minutes.
Once the fire was contained firefighters went inside to search for the dog and found it lifeless. Despite resuscitation efforts from firefighters and Columbus Regional Hospital medics, the dog died.
Firefighters say the fire started in a bedroom that was being used as a storage area. The bedroom also contained the home’s heating and cooling system.
“Damage to the home was extensive and firefighters consider it a total loss. No working smoke alarms were found within the home,” the fire department said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
