SEYMOUR – Dressed for a ski trip instead of a golf tournament, Bedford North Lawrence survived frigid temperatures and wind chills to finish third in the season-opening Seymour Invitational during boys high school golf action on Saturday.
The Stars posted a team total of 364. Guerin Catholic, the defending state champion, won the 11-team event at Shadowood with a remarkable score of 315, while Madison was a distant second with 347.
Colton Staggs paced BNL with an 84 (finishing seventh as an individual) while Jett Jones totaled 90.
“It was a brutally difficult day on the golf course,” BNL coach Jeff Hein said. “I am proud of all of them for surviving today’s conditions, which made for a bad April Fools joke. To play in that strong of a wind, cold temperatures and on a very wet golf course, was difficult but we all made it to the finish line today.
“Colton played a good round, especially considering he had four penalty shots. His short game was spot on most of the day and he grinded out a good score for the conditions. Jett had some trouble scoring today. His putting and his short game wasn’t where he would like it to be.”
Tyler Bellush (95) and Houston Corbin (95) capped the scoring for the Stars. Dillon Lewis was the fifth-player tiebreaker as Brownstown also posted 364.
“I’m proud of Dillon in his first varsity match,” Hein said. “He came through for his team. We needed his score to break the tie for third. Tyler has been playing well but had a tough day all around. Houston played well at times and putted it well until the final few holes, when it became very cold and we couldn’t feel our hands. It’s a good starting point to the season.”
BNL will host Bloomington South on Thursday.
