BEDFORD – A Bedford man is facing drug charges after police stopped his vehicle Tuesday in the 3000 block of Mitchell Road.
According to Oolitic Town Marshal James Harrington, he stopped a vehicle being driven by 44-year-old James Bartlett because it was traveling between 45 to 50 miles per hour in a 35-mile-per-hour zone.
Police spoke to both Bartlett and his passenger 26-year-old Evin Richards.
Marshall Harrington deployed his canine Deny Joe who alerted police to possible drugs in the vehicle.
During the search of the vehicle, police found a small plastic bag that contained five Alprazolam pills in the glove box. Bartlett told police the pills belonged to his wife, who had a valid prescription for the medication. However, police learned Bartlett’s wife had no valid prescription for the medication.
Marshall Harrington noted in the report that he witnessed Bartlett hand his passenger something and saw him place that item in the glove box before the vehicle was stopped.
Police arrested both Bartlett and Richards on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of a legend drug. The prosecutor’s office did not file charges against Richards and he was released from custody.
