PAOLI – Bedford North Lawrence won three divisions, including a sweep of the doubles, en route to the team title in the Paoli Invitational during girls high school tennis action on Saturday.
The Stars (3-1) also went undefeated at No.3 singles and added two wins on the other singles courts to conquer Paoli, South Central and Southwestern by the points system.
“It was a really good day for BNL girls tennis,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “First tournament for the year and came out champs.”
Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride rolled through two matches at No.1 doubles. In their opener, they topped South Central’s Madalyn Archibald and Madalyn Waverton 6-0, 6-0. They backed that up with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Southwestern’s Autumn Gross and Natalie LaRue.
The Stars were equally dominant at No.2 doubles. Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge thumped Southwestern’s Raygen Crawford and Kaylee Hite 6-0, 6-1, then swept past Paoli’s Ava Hall and Audrey Hall 6-0, 6-0.
“Our doubles were just too much for any doubles team there today,” Stigall said. “We are finding that we are stronger in those spots than we even realize.”
In singles, Italy Lewis won twice at No.3, zipping past South Central’s MaKaylie Patterson 6-0, 6-0 before edging Southwestern’s Ava Barnes 7-5, 6-4.
At No.1 singles, BNL’s Becca Epping dropped a 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 decision to Paoli’s Maddie Warren, then rebounded to clip South Central’s Kendall Kiper 6-0, 6-1. At No.2, Nadia Anderson suffered a tough 7-5, 3-6, 10-3 loss to Southwestern’s Emma Hatton, then bounced back for a 6-0, 6-1 win over South Central’s Radia Coffman.
“Our singles were all very good, close matches,” Stigall said. “It was a really good day of playing for the team today. We learned a lot about playing in cold and in wind, and playing to win. Proud of our team.”
BNL will host Bloomington North on Monday.
