BEDFORD – During a meeting on Thursday, members of the Lawrence County Redevelopment Commission agreed to table action on improvements to the bridge structure on Meridian Road in Mitchell.
The bridge, which has suffered damage due to the number of large vehicles which often use it, particularly during construction efforts at the nearby Lehigh plant, needs repair urgently, Mitchell Mayor Nathan Jenkins told the commission at a meeting in January.
On the agenda for Thursday’s meeting was the potential approval of an agreement with a contractor who would help the commission obtain necessary permits and create design models for the improvements, but the commission moved to instead table the item, opting to wait on bids for the upcoming construction of a shell building in Mitchell’s Industrial Park.
The decision was made so they can have a better idea of where they stand financially, knowing how much will need to be allocated for upcoming projects, such as the 50,000 square-foot shell building, which the commission is contractually obligated to enter into a construction agreement by the end of June following the City of Mitchell’s recent decision to provide them with the land where the building will be built.
The commission plans to readdress the issue at their next scheduled meeting, where they will have more information on bids submitted for the shell building project, which is set for May 11.
