MITCHELL – After entering the bottom of the seventh inning down by one run, Mitchell High School managed to pull out the win over Eastern Greene 8-6 on Tuesday, thanks to a two-run walk-off double from Matti Rosenberger.

The Thunderbirds broke the 5-5 tie in the top of the seventh, following a bunt from Addison Ramey, which allowed Mallory Shelton to score. Entering the final inning of play trailing 6-5, the Bluejackets managed to get two runners on base for Malaya Tanglao, who singled to center field, bringing Caitlyn Mullis across home plate and advancing Avery Southern to third. Page Mullis was the next to step to the plate for Mitchell, drawing an international walk from the Thunderbirds, following her two doubles earlier in the game.

Then, with the base loaded, Rosenberger hit one to center field, which scored Tanglao and Southern to give the Bluejackets the victory.

Despite Mitchell coming away from the game with less total hits than Eastern Greene, seven for the Bluejackets to the Thunderbirds’ 10, they were able to hang around throughout, thanks to a combined eight RBIs in the game, including home runs from Brazzell, her third of the year and Southern, her team-leading fifth this season.

Southern also earned the win at the mound for the Bluejackets, bringing her season total to four. She threw for five innings, striking out four, while giving up nine hits and three earned runs. She was relieved by Karsyn Coleman, who threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run and striking out three.

Mitchell are now 7-5 on the season, with a 1-1 record in Patoka Lake Athletic Confernce games. They’ll next play on Wednesday, when they travel to Marengo to take on PLAC opponent Crawford County (0-6).
