The quick action of firefighters prevented a home from being consumed by fire

BEDFORD – Firefighters from Lawrence County Fire Territory and Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at 1051 Vinegar Hill Addition Thursday night.

The home is owned by Evan Griggs. When firefighters arrived at 10:03 p.m. they found the house full of heavy smoke.

“It was a great thing to have firefighters on duty and ready to respond,” said Chief Bob Brown. “Because of that, we were able to arrive quickly and extinguish the fire with a water can. If not, the turnout would have been a lot different.”

The fire started after a candle was lit in the bathroom. The candle was sitting on a shelf too close to toilet paper which ignited. The fire damaged the shelf and the wall and filled the house with smoke.

“There was very little damage,” Brown added. “The outcome could have been a lot different. This shows the importance of having a station manned 24/7. The fire didn’t get a chance to spread.”
