INDIANA – Southside Marion County motorists’ morning commutes will look a little different along Southport Road and State Road 37. Crews switched traffic into a new phase Sunday night to allow for the construction of mainline I-69 and the completion of the Southport Road interchange. Access to S.R. 37 from Old Southport Road has been removed, and access to S.R. 37 from Banta Road (Marion County) will be removed later this week as part of the switch to new pavement.
The following movements at Southport Road will be in place during the seven-day closure at Old Southport Road:
- S.R. 37 northbound to Southport Road (temporary pavement)
- S.R. 37 southbound to Southport Road
- Southport Road to S.R. 37 Southbound
Of special note for motorists, crews opened the new southbound on-ramp from Southport Road with a temporary traffic signal to allow for safe entry onto S.R. 37. The ramp signal is synchronized with the signal on southbound S.R. 37, so please stop on red and only proceed onto the highway when the signal is green.
During the seven-day closure, the Southport Road on-ramp to northbound S.R. 37 will remain closed as crews complete the ramp and tie it into the new northbound travel lanes. The Southbound S.R. 37 ramp onto Southport Road will remain open throughout the duration of the closure. To learn more, watch this short video showing which movements are open and what to expect during the closure.
Thank you for your patience as bridge crews continue to make progress in improving the I-465 overpass above Harding Street. Nightly 20-minute stoppages between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Harding Street are expected as workers continue to safely remove the existing bridge.
The new system interchange is beginning to take shape! Motorists should watch for heavy trucks entering and exiting the highway in the area.
As crews progress east along I-465 on the south side, there will be a weekend closure on Bluff Road on or after May 5 for bridge demolition. Traffic is encouraged to seek alternate routes and plan accordingly. The official detour will follow Thompson Road, Meridian Street, and Hanna Avenue.
The S.R. 144 intersection with Old S.R. 37/Waverly Park Road is being reconstructed as a large roundabout. Motorists should expect the traffic signal at Old S.R. 37/Waverly Park Road to be removed in late June when the roundabout is opened to traffic.
A reminder that as seasonal activity begins to pick up along I-69/S.R. 37, motorists are encouraged to watch for trucks entering and exiting the highway in Johnson and Marion counties.
Watch for mowing crews in the shoulders and median along I-69 in Morgan and Johnson counties.
The actual starting date and duration for work and any closures may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.
