MITCHELL – After losing their second game of the season in their previous outing on Friday against Perry Central, No. 3 ranked Mitchell High School got back on track on Wednesday with a 5-1 win over Salem.
The Bluejackets were able to score early against the Lions, getting their first runner of the game across home plate in the first inning, when Simon Gaines, who singled to leadoff the inning reached home after a Salem error.
It was the second inning where Mitchell did their best work behind the plate, scoring four runs on four hits in the period.
Gibson Glassco and Ashton Luman reached base on back-to-back hits to kick things off, before another Lions error allowed Gaines to reach base, scoring Glassco for the team’s second run of the game. A two-run triple from Ben Seitzinger followed, with an RBI-single from Carsyn Herald bringing him home in the next at bat for their fifth run of the game.
Though they were unable to score for the remainder of play, the Bluejackets’ 5-0 lead at that point was enough to seal it, as they were able to hold Salem to just one run in the game, which was scored by Kaleb Tucker in the fifth inning after a base hit from Cameron Albertson.
Mitchell head coach Jerry Chaney commended his teams’ effort on the night, citing their ability to bring runners home, with four RBIs in the game, as well as their sound defense play which saw the team commit just one error as keys to the game.
“I thought we played a nice game. We pitched well, made the routine plays routinely and had some timely hitting,” said Chaney. “We beat a well coached team.”
Herald finished the game with two hits in three at bats to lead the Bluejackets. He finished the night with two RBIs as well, which was matched by Seitzinger following his second-inning triple.
Gaines earned the win for Mitchell, his third of the season. He pitched five innings, allowing four hits and one earned run, striking out five of the 22 Salem batters he faced in the game.
The Bluejackets are now 11-2 on the year, with a 3-1 record in Patoka Lake Athletic Conference games. They’ll play next on Thursday, when they take on PLAC opponent Orleans (3-7).
The Bulldogs are currently tied with Mitchell at 3-1 in PLAC play. Both teams trail Perry Central, who are now 4-0 in the conference after their victory over the Bluejackets on Friday, followed by a win against Paoli on Tuesday.
