MITCHELL – After scoring eight runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings, No. 4 ranked Mitchell High School jumped out to a big lead over Northeast Dubois that proved too large for the Jeeps to close, leading to the Bluejackets picking up their 14th win of the season on Saturday, 11-5.
The two teams were matching each other run-for-run early on, with Northeast Dubois taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning behind an RBIs from Clay Fuhrman and Gaige Schepers.
Mitchell fired back in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs of their own to tie things up. They led the inning off with back-to-back hits from Ethan Turner and Gibson Glassco before a double from Kody Earl gave Turner the opportunity to score the Bluejackets’ first run of the game. Their second run game a few at-bats later on a sacrifice fly from Simon Gaines, scoring Glassco.
The Jeeps found their way onto the scoreboard again in the third, adding another run courtesy of Schepers’ second hit and RBI of the game, allowing Aidan Dodd, who drew earlier in the inning, to cross home plate.
Once again, Mitchell battled back with a tying run of their own in the bottom of the inning, this time coming when Bryson Zeeks hit a single to bat in Ben Seitzinger, who reached second with a double to lead off.
Northeast Dubois broke the tie again in the fourth inning, once again reclaiming a two-run lead. The Jeeps’ first run in the period was scored following a balk by Bluejackets pitcher Ashton Luman, which scored Dylan Hembree who reached third after batting leadoff. In the following at-bat, Dodd singled to left field to bring Ty Kalb home from second.
Mitchell finally broke the stalemate in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to take their first lead of the game.
After a double from Earl to leadoff, Gaines hit a two-base shot of his own for his second RBI of the ballgame. AJ Sarver and Seitzinger reached base in the following at-bats to load up the bags for Zeeks, who drew a walk to score the tying run.
With the bases still loaded, Turner stepped to the plate and slammed a line drive to right field, which brought home two Bluejackets’ runners to give the team a 7-5 lead.
The Jeeps threatened to counter in the next inning, putting runners on second and third with just one out recorded, but Mitchell’s defense held true, recording two straight outs and not allowing Northeast Dubois to counter.
After taking the mound to start the inning, Earl struck out two in the inning for Mitchell, including a crucial K against Hembree for the second out, not allowing the runner on third to score.
“They had runners on second and third and they stopped them that was big. That was big and, and again, I thought, you know, I thought Ashton did a good job pitching started the game. I thought Kody came back and did a nice job too. The boys, they were resilient,” Mitchell head coach Jerry Chaney said.
The Bluejackets continued to pile it on in the bottom of the inning, adding another four runs to their total, which would be the final runs scored in the game.
Four Mitchell batters, Turner, Carsyn Herald, Seitzinger, and Zeeks, earned hits and batted runs in during the inning.
On the day, the Bluejackets’ bats were active, totaling 14 hits with 11 RBIs as a team.
“I thought that our bats took care of the day. We just kept hitting, we kept the foot on the gas and just kept getting hits. I’m proud of my boys for the way they hit,” Chaney said after the game.
Two Mitchell hitters finished with three hits to lead the team, Turner and Sarver. Turner also finished with a team-high three RBIs in his four at-bats.
Luman earned the win for the Bluejackets, his fourth from the mound this season. He threw four innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs. Earl took over in the fifth to close out the game, allowing two his and no runs. The two combined for seven strikeouts, Luman with three and Earl with four.
We were working their pitchers and our pitchers were throwing strikes and doing what they were supposed to do and our defense was tremendous again. They got some runs early on us, and we made a couple of mistakes but up and down the lineup I thought we looked good the majority of the way,” said Chaney. “Dubois actually stole some runs from us there with some good defensive plays they had because we pounded all through the lineup, so I’m proud of my boys. That was a good win over a good team.”
The Bluejackets are now 14-2 on the season. They’ll next play on Monday when they head to Elnora to take on North Daviess (8-5).
