BLOOMINGTON – Ryker Hughes pitched a complete-game masterpiece as Bedford North Lawrence thumped Bloomington North 5-1 during baseball action on Tuesday.
Hughes allowed only two hits and struck out nine for the Stars (13-5). He also contributed two hits, and Jonny Stone had three hits with two RBIs during an impressive road victory.
“Ryker pitched realty well,” BNL coach Jeff Callahan said. “He was getting his pitches over on any count, getting ahead of hitters, doing a good job of filling up the zone.”
BNL took advantage of two North errors to score twice in the first, with Kline Woodward singling in the first run and with Stone adding a two-out RBI single. In the second, Carter Bennett doubled, Nate Pemberton bunted him to third, and Kaedyn Bennett chased him home with a safety squeeze.
“We did a good job of executing,” Callahan said. “We got some bunts down. We had really good execution, kids doing their job, doing what’s best for the team.”
The Stars made it 4-0 in the third on a Hughes double and Stone RBI single. In the fifth, Woodward walked, went to third on a Hughes single and scored on Cade Mungle’s sacrifice fly.
North got its run in the fifth on Graham Freund’s solo homer to center.
BNL will visit Mitchell, ranked No.4 in Class 2A, on Friday.
