Man killed at Bear Run Coal Mine identified

CARLISLE – Sullivan County Sheriff Jason Bobbit has identified the man killed in a coal mine accident back in April.

Phillip Heymann, 59, of Washington was struck and killed by a large piece of equipment at the Bear Run Coal Mine on April 20th.

Emergency crews were alerted to the accident around 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 20th at the coal mine in Carlisle.

Upon arrival, medical personnel on the scene told officers that an employee had been struck by a large piece of equipment. Heymann was pronounced dead on the scene before officers arrived.

Heymann was a 1981 graduate of Washington High School. He was a United States Army veteran and was a member of the American Legion Post 121. Phil owned and operated Sugar Ridge Apparel and Graphics. He worked for 38 years in the coal mining industry, primarily for Black Beauty Coal and Peabody Energy.

All mining operations were suspended while the Mining Safety and Health Administration conducted an investigation into the accident.
