BEDFORD – Seymour swept the singles while edging Bedford North Lawrence 3-2 during girls high school tennis action on Tuesday.
The Stars (8-5) won two tough matches in doubles, but the Owls won a key tiebreaker at No.3 singles to keep BNL at bay.
Seymour’s Brooke Schafstall, an IU East recruit, posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Becca Epping at No.1, Elise Hartung clipped Ashlyn Wever 6-4, 6-2 at No.2, and Claire Combs stopped Italy Lewis 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker), 6-1 at No.3/
“It was a good night of matches,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “Seymour is always a really good, strong team. Brooke is a really talented player. She hits it hard, she places the ball well, she makes good decisions. She’s just a tough player.”
In doubles, BNL’s Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride scrambled past Jessica Houghland and Caroline Thompson 6-3, 7-5 at No.1, while Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge had to fight back for a 1-6, 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker), 10-4 win over Addison Hunsley and Ava Sunbury at No.2.
“Our doubles teams had two really good matches,” Stigall said. “Two doubles started off really slow and really shaky. They couldn’t hit volleys, they couldn’t get to the ball. They were tight a little bit nervous or scared that second set, and they just turned it on and they came back firing. It was good to see them come back and fight through what they were going through, because it was not pretty to start.
“One doubles had a tough match. Sometimes they make a little bit harder for themselves, but for the most part they played pretty well. There’s a few things we need to really figure out before we go into tournament time, but it’s good to see that they can have some struggles and still come out with wins.”
BNL will host Edgewood and celebrate Senior Night on Friday.
