BLOOMINGTON – Carrie Docherty, professor of kinesiology and interim vice provost for strategy and innovation, has been named vice provost for faculty and academic affairs at Indiana University Bloomington, effective May 8.
Docherty succeeds Kim Geeslin and Eliza Pavalko, both of whom demonstrated their dedication to faculty and academic appointees through the comprehensive development of inclusion-focused programs and professional development opportunities.
“I am thrilled to continue working with Carrie to strengthen support for our faculty and academic appointees — from orientation and professional development to tenure and promotion,” IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Rahul Shrivastav said. “With her exceptional creativity, propensity for innovation, and distinct ability to bring people together, I look forward to all the ways she will facilitate inclusive community building and fortify academic excellence on campus.”
The Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs works with full- and part-time faculty and librarians, student academic appointees, postdoctoral researchers, and research assistants on all matters of academic administration, policy, and planning. The vice provost shapes the implementation of strategic campus initiatives that involve faculty and academic excellence and provides wide-ranging resources and support for faculty to find community and belonging while excelling in research, creative activities, teaching, and service.
Docherty joined the School of Public Health-Bloomington faculty in the Department of Kinesiology in 2003 and has served as a professor and executive associate dean.
With more than 25 years of clinical experience, Docherty is an internationally recognized scholar in her field. Her research focuses on rehabilitation sciences — specifically, how chronic ankle instability affects health-related quality of life. She has published extensively and has pioneered the way clinicians and researchers classify individuals with chronic ankle instability.
She has been named a fellow of both the National Academy of Kinesiology and the National Athletic Trainers Association and earned the Outstanding Educator Award from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association.
Throughout her career, Docherty has mentored fellow faculty, along with hundreds of graduate students, and she continues to mentor future scholars and leaders in the field.
“Over my 20-year career at IUB, I have had the opportunity to work closely with the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs, and I have seen the positive impact this office has in the lives of our faculty,” Docherty said. “I am honored and excited to have the opportunity to continue this legacy and support our exceptional faculty in this ever-new and evolving landscape of higher education.”
As interim vice provost for strategy and innovation during the recent academic year, Docherty managed strategic planning and implementation of priority initiatives, including the IUB 2030 strategic plan. Docherty convened more than 450 faculty, staff, students, and community members across 25 working groups to ensure a meaningfully representative planning process. In coordination with partners across the university and state, she shepherded the plan to completion and has played a critical role in designing an effective implementation structure.
There are no current plans to fill the position of vice provost for strategy and innovation, created in 2022.
