JACKSON CO. – On Monday, May 8, Troopers from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post began investigating a crash on US 31 in Jackson County that resulted in a Scott County, man being flown to an Indianapolis area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The initial investigation by Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructions indicated that at approximately 2:30 p.m., a white 2005 Ford F-250, driven by Brian Mullins, 43, of Scottsburg, was traveling north on US 31, approaching County Road 275 North (New Farmington Road), just south of Seymour.
For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the east side of the roadway. The vehicle overcorrected and crossed US 31 and then left the west side of the road.
The vehicle struck an embankment before striking the passenger side of a 2023 Freightliner semi pulling a trailer, being driven by Daniel Adkins, 45, Harrison, Ohio, that was stopped on County Road 275 North at the intersection to US 31. Mullins, who was not properly wearing a safety belt, was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
Mullins sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash. He was transported by ambulance to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour before being flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment.
Adkins was not injured in the crash.
Toxicology results on both drivers are pending at this time.
The investigation by Trooper Andrew Garrett is ongoing. Trp. Garrett was assisted by additional Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists and Troopers from the Indiana State Police-Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. The Indiana State Police was also assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Seymour Fire Department, Jackson County EMS, Indiana Department of Transportation, 31 Wrecker Service, and Duke Energy.
