GALENA – Floyd Central swept the singles while conquering Bedford North Lawrence 4-1 in the consolation round of the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament on Wednesday.
The Stars won on the No.2 doubles court as Izzy Alldredge and Kenley Craig remained unbeaten this season with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Abby Slaughter and Zoe Vanderhoof.
“They started a little slow in those first couple of games but started placing volleys and really just frustrating their opponents,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “By the second set, they had gotten in Floyd’s head, made them make a lot of errors and bad shots out of frustration. It’s great to win a court at Floyd.”
The Highlanders dropped only seven games in the other four matches. Sophie Wood topped Becca Epping 6-1, 6-0 at No.1 singles, Katherine Fancher stopped Ashlyn Wever 6-1, 6-0 at No.2, and Ivy Hasenour rolled past Italy Lewis 6-3, 6-0 at No.3.
At No.1 doubles, Floyd’s Millie Meunier and Libby Banet, the defending state runners-up, defeated Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride 6-0, 6-2.
“They are very good,” Stigall said. “They just had too much hitting power for us today. Our singles were just outmatched. We are pretty used to that against Floyd teams, tennis is a big sport there. They have amazing facilities and programs. They’re just always really tough.”
BNL (9-7) will conclude the HHC tourney on Thursday, hosting Jennings County.
