BEDFORD – Battling through fatigue after a grueling week, Bedford North Lawrence capped the regular season with a victory in the finale of the Hoosier Hills Conference tournament.
Italy Lewis recorded a key win at No.3 singles as the Stars edged Jennings County 3-2 on Thursday afternoon, repeating a similar victory over the Panthers when the league rivals collided on April 20.
With the Stars sweeping the doubles, Lewis posted the necessary swing point as she rolled past Jocelyn Valdovinos 6-1, 6-1.
“Italy played well,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said.. “She kept the errors under control.”
BNL’s doubles cruised without much conflict. Bella Stigall and Mallory Pride conquered Mia Silvey and Gabi Morin 6-0, 6-4 at No.1, while Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge swept aside Trina Collins and Makenzey Carr 6-1, 6-0 at No.2
Jennings posted wins at the top of the singles. Tatum Brown bounced Becca Epping 6-0, 6-1 at No.1, while Kaydence Lowman topped Ashlyn Wever 6-0, 6-1 at No.2.
BNL (10-7), after playing three conference matches in four days, will get a needed break before the sectional at Bloomington South next week.
“They were a little tired,” Stigall said. “We’ve had two late matches, two tough matches in a row. So I hope this gives us momentum. We’re in a tough sectional. It depends on the draw. Hopefully, it will take us into that.”
The IHSAA will announce the draw for the sectional on Monday.
