BEDFORD – A Williams woman was arrested Tuesday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after a Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputy stopped her vehicle at 2:10 a.m. on 16th Street in Bedford.
The deputy reported he was traveling west on 16th Street and was behind a silver Jeep stopped at the stoplight at Edgewood Drive. The light was red, and when it turned green, the driver of the Jeep 25-year-old Heidi Coats continued west on 16th Street and then began to veer, and then turned back hitting the curb. The Jeep then stopped for the red light at the intersection of Plaza Drive. The Jeep continued traveling west until it arrived at the intersection of State Road 37 and then made an abnormally wide left turn to travel south on State Road 37. The driver veered into the left lane of travel. The driver ran the red light at the intersection of Patrick Robbins Way and the officer stopped the vehicle. The driver of the Jeep stopped at the intersection of State Road 37 and 29th Street.
Police say the driver Heidi Coats smelled of alcohol. Coats, whose speech was slurred, told police she had not been drinking.
Coats failed several field sobriety tests. She then agreed to a breathalyzer test. Her blood-alcohol content was 0.215.
Coats was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
