INDIANA – Governor Eric J. Holcomb and the Indiana State Personnel Department today announced three state agencies that received the 2023 Top Workplace award winners. The agencies include the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC), Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), and Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR).
In partnership with Energage, IndyStar conducts an annual survey of more than 2000 Indiana businesses, learning about their leadership, values, work culture, and employee engagement. The results of those surveys showed that IEDC, DOR, and BMV all ranked in the top 10% of surveyed businesses.
“As one of Indiana’s largest employers, I’m proud of the outstanding agencies that are being recognized as some of the best,” Gov. Holcomb said. “We strive to make the State of Indiana one of the best places to work – and we’re continuing to build on the momentum for competitive salaries and policies that promote work-life balance.”
IEDC employs approximately 100 staff members across Central Indiana and was recognized as a top small company in the 2023 Top Workplace awards. Notable feedback from the survey showed employees are energized by the direction of the IEDC, which is a quasi-agency charged with growing the state economy, driving economic development, and helping businesses launch, grow and locate in the state. Additionally, the IEDC received high marks for its collaborative, innovative, forward-thinking and rewarding workplace culture. The team’s high engagement helped secure more than $27 billion in new committed investments to the state over the last five quarters to propel Indiana’s economy of the future.
Indiana BMV employs more than 1400 team members across the state with a vision of being the most efficient and trustworthy motor vehicle agency in the nation. The BMV was awarded the Top Workplace honor for both USA and Indiana in its first year of participation. Employees provided feedback exceeding survey benchmarks in areas including training, management support, benefits, and pay. These benchmarks align with the agency’s strategic focus on employee investment and a commitment to support employees in growing as individuals and team contributors within the agency.
Since 2019, DOR has impressively held the title of an IndyStar Top Workplace each year, receiving a special award in 2022 for its flexible work-life balance scores. DOR employs nearly 700 Hoosiers striving to make their agency the premier tax administrator in the nation and a great place to work. In addition to the IndyStar recognition, DOR has been recognized as a national, Top Workplace USA for three consecutive years, from 2021–2023.
This year DOR received another special “Culture Excellence” award along with Top Workplace USA recognition for innovation, work-life flexibility, compensation & benefits, leadership, and purposes & values.
DOR staff’s voluntary participation in the determining Energage surveys is anonymous and remains high after five years, demonstrating the agency’s commitment to continuous improvement.
In addition to work-life balance, State of Indiana agencies prioritize the continued education of their teams with tuition assistance and reimbursement programs for eligible full-time employees. The state also offers its employees paid community service leave time, flexible scheduling and remote work options, as well as generous holiday, vacation, and personal leave time.
