SEYMOUR – Bedford North Lawrence senior Mary Batz won two events during the IHSAA girls track sectional on Tuesday night.
Batz raced to the finish line first in the 200-meter dash in 27.28 seconds, and she also crossed first in the 400 in 1:00.67. The top three in each event advanced to the regional at Bloomington North on May 23.
The Stars finished fourth in the team competition with 66.33 points. Seymour won the championship with 129.
“It was a good night,” BNL coach Jason Webb said. “We decided to run Mary in the 200 late in the year, because she had built up stamina while running the 400, and it worked out. I knew she had a chance, but to run a minute flat in the 400 was ‘Holy cow!’”
Other regional qualifiers for BNL included Kayln Ritz (second in the pole vault at 7-6, behind Eastern Pekin’s Elizabeth Trueblood at 10-0), Ellie Anderson (second in the long jump at 16-1, with Brownstown’s Hailey Bair winning that event at 16-1 and taking the title in a tiebreaker), and the 400 relay team of Rose Dusard, Lily Dusard, Tracey Hanners and Anderson in 53.74 (Brownstown won that race in 51.74).
Mitchell’s Jillian Bond was third in the shot put (32-0 1/4) and Zoey Smith was third in the 800 (2:35.33) to advance.
The top three in the regional will advance to the state finals at Indiana University on June 3.
