BEDFORD – A Vallonia man was arrested on drug charges on Friday, May 12 after a Bedford Police officer stopped his vehicle on 22nd Street for not having a working taillight or brake lights.
The driver of the vehicle was 65-year-old Kim Kaufman. Kaufman got out of the vehicle to check the lights.
He then requested to retrieve a tool from the rear of his vehicle so he could troubleshoot the problem. When Kaufman opened his back driver’s side door and began digging through his tools, the officer noticed a loaded 9mm magazine on the floor of the Jeep.
Kaufman told the officer there was a black Taurus G2C 9mm handgun in a glove between the driver’s seat and the middle console.
The officer then asked to search Kaufman’s vehicle and he stated. “I haven’t done nothing wrong.”
Kaufman was then informed he was a previously convicted felon and it was illegal for him to be in possession of a handgun and he was detained.
Canine Zazu arrived on the scene and alerted officers to possible narcotics in the Jeep.
Officers located a cut straw inside of a zipper pocket in the sun visor above the steering wheel. The cut
straw contained crystal meth and numerous prescription pills Kaufman did not have prescriptions for.
Kaufman was arrested on charges of possession of meth, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a legend drug.
