Obituary: Hazel L. Allen

October 13, 1928 – May 12, 2023

Hazel L Allen, daughter of the late Audney Franklin Hughes, and Etta May Pardue, was born October 13, 1928, in Monroe County, Indiana.

She attended Oolitic High School.

She professed her faith in Jesus Christ at Donica Church of God, where she served in several roles, including Sunday School Teacher, and was the first female on the board of trustees.

She was united in holy matrimony with her lifelong sweetheart, Richard Allen on March 23, 1943.

Mrs. Allen managed the offices of an optometrist, ophthalmologist, dentist, and plastic surgeon in Bedford, Indiana. She then owned and operated The Playpen, Tiny Tots Togs, and Sofaland Furniture with Richard.

She served as a supervisor and built the first Color Television for RCA.

Hazel had the gift of encouragement and was interested in everyone regardless of their life situation. She loved every one.

She quietly departed this life at Pruitt Healthcare in Jasper Georgia on Friday, May 12, 2023.

She was preceded in death by her son, Dick Allen, her husband, Richard Allen, sisters, Vivian DePaulo, Catherine Owens, and brother Bill Hughes. She is survived by her brother, John Hughes. Her life will be forever cherished in the lives of her son, Greg, six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, and the service will be at 2 p.m. at Donica Church of God, 1969 Donica Church Rd., Bedford. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Cresthaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
